New York City this December 2018: Top Things to Do and See

New York City December 2018

Experience New York City this December 2018 when it is dressed for the holidays. Here’s the best things to do and see while you’re there.

Until this past weekend, it had been years since I’ve been to the ‘city that never sleeps.’  While I was young, my family traveled to NYC occasionally to see my sister.  She was a student at NYU.  I’ll never forget playing pickle-ball in seventh grade gym class on September 11, 2001.  A teacher came to tell me about the plane crashes.  Although my sister was not physically harmed, the attacks impacted my family greatly. As so many of us were.

In response, my dad was a part of a spiritual care team that headed into the city for the next eight months that followed. Given these connections, I have an affinity for the city.  I imagine we all have some type of connection to New York.

Here’s how to spend your time (and money) in New York City this December 2018:

See a Live Performance on Broadway

Come From Away

If you’re in New York City this December 2018, you must see a live performance on Broadway.  I recommend Come From Away.  Come From Away is a new musical on Broadway. It is the true story of 7,000 airline passengers that find themselves stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland.

With a small cast playing the roles of many different characters, the show will bring you back to your story on that day.  The story highlights the goodwill people have toward one another in the midst of tragedy. This performance will make you laugh, cry, and gasp. I want to see it again.

Among many storylines, it highlights the story of a female American Airlines captain, Beverly Bass. Her plane diverted on 9/11 to Gander. This role is played by Tony-nominated Jenn Colella, who is absolutely captivating.  It was a fun show to see with my husband, who works as an airline pilot. We reflected on all the commercial airline industry changes after the show.

But get to New York City to see it fast, because people are saying this show could be the next Hamilton.  That means ticket prices are only going to keep rising.

If you want to read up about the true story before seeing the play, pick up a copy of The Day the World Came to Town by Jim Defede.

American Son

After the play, I noticed several black SUVs and some security on the street.  A few minutes later, only a handful of people and myself noticed Michelle Obama slip out a side door of the theater next door. She had probably just seen American Son, starring lead actress Kerry Washington (from Scandal).  I was star struck upon seeing the former First Lady, Michelle Obama. So I regret to inform you that I did not get a picture. Within seconds she entered her SUV and away she went.  People passing us on the sidewalk only a few steps behind had no idea who had just been there!

I am even more excited now to read Michelle Obama’s new book, Becoming.  So anyway, if Michelle Obama saw American Son on Broadway, you should definitely see it too.

Hamilton

If money is no object, drop some serious cash to go see Hamilton in New York City this December 2018. This play is an experience of a lifetime. Or if you’re feeling lucky, download the app and enter the lottery a couple nights before the showing. If you win, you’ll only have to pay $10 for a ticket (get up to 2 tickets).  Check with other box offices too, because there are other in person lotteries that exist for some shows if you’re willing to be more flexible or these online lotteries.

Rockefeller Center

Take a stroll down Fifth Avenue until you find yourself at Rockefeller Center. You will see the most beautiful Christmas tree and holiday light show.  The lights are set to music on the face of the Saks 5th Avenue building.

Expect major crowds on the weekends. Leave strollers behind if you’re traveling with kids.  Wear your infant/toddlers, and allow the older kids to walk holding your hand.  Dress them in bright colors in case you get separated.

Go Ice Skating in New York City this December 2018

At the same location as the Christmas tree, the Rockefeller Rink is a beautiful place to skate. General admission tickets are always available when the rink is open to the public, but prices vary based on the date.  But if you’re looking to do things cheaper, check out the rinks in Central Park instead. You will save half the cost on an adult ticket. You must skate in New York City this December 2018. It’s so fun!

Shop for Toys at FAO Schwarz

Wait in line to enter the new FAO Schwarz.  What a quintessential spot to purchase a special holiday toy for your child, niece, nephew, godchild or grandchild.  The store re-opened on November 16 this year and is stocked with one-of-a-kind toys for kids of all ages. You must shop here in New York City this December 2018.

Read at the New York Public Library

Retreat from the crowds to a quieter and calmer setting.  Bring your own book or borrow one from the shelves at the New York Public Library.  Read at one of the long wooden tables. Or you can explore the genealogical or map collections.

Stay at The Stewart Hotel in New York City this December 2018

Conveniently located across the street from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, this Manhattan hotel is a wonderful spot to stay.  You can walk to Times Square or shopping on Fifth Avenue. Easily access the places you want to see. We suggest you fly into the less congested Newark airport and take the NJ Transit train for only $13 into the city.  Less crowds, less construction, less stress. Get off the train at Penn Station.  The Stewart Hotel is just across the street on 7th Avenue. It’s a great hotel in New York City this December 2018.
